The wave for this
sound is a
simple pattern.

The wave for this
sound is a mess
.
No pattern - the sound is
more like a noise.

The lowest note on the flute is middle c.
Make the pipe shorter to make the pitch go up. Make it longer to go down. On a real flute this is done by covering and opening holes.
The next C higher vibrates twice as fast. This makes it an octave (eight steps) higher.
The air in the flute vibrates at about 250 times per second for this note.
The air goes up and down a short pipe quicker because there isn't so far for the waves to travel.
The air in the flute vibrates at about 500 times per second for this note.

How high can you hear?
This will depend on how old you are as well as how good your hearing is.
As we get older we are less able to hear higher sounds.
Try clicking on these to see which ones you can hear.

middle A
(orchestras tune to this)
Hz = Hertz (or the number of vibrations per second)
supersonic
(above human hearing)

(above 20,000 vibrations per second) but other animals can hear above this. That is why we can’t hear dog whistles!
